Arts and crafts connects the girls with the past and with each other, creating a feeling of nostalgia and appreciation.
Episode 8 - "I Was on School Lunch Duty"
Heh.
This show is so good at connecting the little vignettes. After a woodshop lesson in which Renge and Natsumi made a "thing," Renge was on lunch duty which made the Kogayashi siblings remember how they and Candy Store Lady first met her when she caused a curry lunch disaster at school along with knocking over Natsumi's wooden blocks and gnawing on Komari's teddy bear. Renge gave the "thing" to Candy Store and Komari found her old teddy bear which became a special restoration project she worked on with Hotaru. Creating the wooden "thing" with Renge was the narrative opposite of knocking over Natsumi's blocks. Totally unconnected events connected by memory and nostalgia. Just amazing.
It was especially touching to see Komari remember her first best friend Mr. Shokichi and then ask her new friend to help fix him up. There's that healing anime stuff.
Renge is so dramatic when she gets a bright idea.
Hikage's reputation for being opportunistic has a long history, apparently. The older kids immediately assumed she came to school late just so she could have curry.
I didn't catch it at first, but Natsumi was wiggling around Renge because they were playing peek-a-boo.
A toddler Renge's age isn't supposed to grunt "yoshi!" before she gets up and begins to cause major havoc. Just sayin'.
I immediately thought of the Stay-Puft Marshmallow Man.
My instincts were rewarded. Utter devastation.
At least Renge picked up a lifelong (all six years so far...) hankering for curry. Oh, and the patented Renge how-super-awesome-am-I spread arm pose got its start on that day.
The title letters had some extra fun this episode too. Very Acchi Kocchi of them.
Yay! Natsumi and Komari get to do the That's All Folks end scene. I wonder if the other characters will get a chance too before the end of the season.
Hotaru is talented! She made a plushy of everybody!
This part of the season is apparently after the time her obsession got found out in the first season. I always found it funny how self-conscious Hotaru felt about all the Koma-chan plushies, but Komari just chalked it up to Hotaru being a grade schooler and really liking stuffed toys.
At the end, Komari made the point to Natsumi to take care of her precious belongings. Komari learned that through arts and crafts, bringing the narrative all the way back to the beginning of the episode. Neat.
