At the Giro, instead of champagne, the podium winners of each stage are given a bottle of prosecco, the Italian sparkling wine. Prosecco differs from champagne in that it does not ferment in the bottle and grows stale comparatively quickly. Victorious cyclists don't have to worry, though. They usually pop the corks on stage, well within the usual 3 year time limit.
