The Giro's third stage, from Rapallo to Sestri Levante, may be the shortest, but it was quite hilly for only the first week of a Grand Tour. The pure sprinters weren't going to make it over the steep ramps, but some of the strong one day classics riders could. Michael Matthews, who did so well last year at the Giro, followed those expectations, beating Philippe Gilbert and Fabio Felline to the line.
