Yowamushi Pedal - Grande Road - Episode 22
Onoda and Manami begin their head to head matchup to the finish line.
Heh.
Oh. So that's how they get Manami and Onoda to square off against each other. Not some accidental frame failure, but pure killer instinct. I still think Fukutomi should have gone with him for insurance. If you can load up on the podium without sacrificing the overall victory, why not?
Toudou is such a font of foreshadowing. Fukutomi let us know that Manami's wings are like glass when he gets to a summit finish because he just keeps upshifting and draining his legs, but Toudou says climbers only have brains for climbing.
Yes, fujoshi, Manami is an M. Go crazy.
Let's get all emotional over the announcement of Onoda's name for the finale.
Well, if you're Onoda's mom, let's just marvel at some kid having the exact same name as your nerdy little son.
Fukutomi really matured over the last year. I can't imagine his former self letting a teammate go up the road because he has the best chance of winning.
There's only 2 km left in this race, so they better get all the jokes in before the last episode.
Manami! You don't mess with a man's Bepsi!
Suddenly, a wild Kinjou appears. FIGHT (Y/N)?
Ah. He's a friendly wild Kinjou. Will he offer you a treasure?
Nope. Water is not Bepsi! The animation style looked almost like last season's. I wonder how long they kept this joke in their back pocket.
Aw. Naruko in the first aid tent was confirmation that he wasn't going to jump out of the ambulance and make one more flashy move.
Hmm.
With only 2 km left to go in the race, one question is whether they'll finish the race next episode and give us a fun resolution for the last episode. We've had flashbacks galore on this final climb, so how many more do we need?
Manami has revealed all his weapons. He even told Onoda that he can't really control when his wings come out, which makes sense because he just takes advantage of a gusting tailwind. The last weapon is the attacking style as he nears the summit. Fukutomi knows that it's a two-edged sword because Manami gets impatient and will shift all the way to his last cog, potentially slowing his pace or wearing him out. Manami is all about feeling sensations on the bike, whether that's wind passing him by or pain in his legs. Toudou warns Fukutomi that Manami may not listen to his order not go past his 8th cog, because he's a climber. He just wants to get to the top first.
What will Onoda do? Will he learn to shift? Will he exhibit monster growth and just turn his pedals even faster? Will he discover a new skill that involves Love Hime? He's already crying that name out when he charges, so that could be something. At the very least, Onoda will give Manami a friendly present in being the first one to ride with him over a peak. Friendship power, amirite?
Cycling Porn.
Naruko's school of shifting, hah! I'm appreciating all the shots of Manami's Look and Onoda's chromoly. Manami is rocking a Campognolo shifter with the iconic thumb lever. These high school kids are using 10 gears on their cassette. My first cassette had 9 gears, but I upgraded the drive train and moved over to 10 a few years ago. Pros are now riding 11.
I liked how they animated Manami's rocking style turning over a heavy cog. The only problem they're not addressing is cross-chaining. If your chain is on the inner ring, the chain will start scraping the front derailleur as you keep shifting towards the smaller heavier cogs. I don't hear any chain scrape as Manami moves from 7 to 8 to 9, but it should be pretty loud at that point. If you're going that fast, why not go down to the big ring and shift into the number 4 or 5 cog? The cadence would be the same and you'd be going the same speed, plus you'd be more explosive in responding to sudden accelerations.
Knowing what gear Manami is in, even with his slower cadence tells me he is absolutely flying up this hill. He's going anywhere from 18 to 22 mph depending on his rpm. That's fast.
