Junketsu no Maria - Episode 10

10 Second Anime - Junketsu no Maria - Episode 10
Maria's sentence for crimes against the Church are interrupted.

Heh.

Viv couldn't lay a weapon on Michael during their fight, yet Joseph was able to hit him with an arrow. This must be more of that Natural Order stuff the angels and old gods keep talking about.

Ezekiel really doesn't want to hurt anyone. Maria's ways must be rubbing off on her, or living with people is instilling empathy. Still, it's pretty shocking to see Ezekiel used as she was intended - a weapon meant to strike down heretics.

After Bernard's talk with Maria last week, I would have thought he would care more about the results of her Inquisition. It looks like he got all that he could out of her, a new theological point to write about. Perhaps he just trusted that God would do as He pleased with her even if he nonchalantly told Gilbert he trusted his judgment.

The charges against Maria, written on her stake, were Witch, Heretic, Sinner. That about covers it, if you accept that summoning demons and old gods is a sin.

Priapus will do anything to save Maria! Even offering a reward to Edwina for her help.

Some reward... Edwina doesn't want to see the D either. Good thing Priapus doesn't have anything to show her then.

Edwina's not usually a flashy witch, but wow, she's still got some powers. Interesting that she offered compensation to the one old god to use his powers, and that it would be paid by the whole coven.

Edwina's scolding of Maria in the public square showed how close they'd gotten. Her point about people being scared of witches as one of their sources of protection was something that Maria forgot. We saw in the first episode that she tried to impersonate a scary old crone, but her disguise fell apart. After that, Anne treated her as an older village girl, which was pretty much the same way she treated the familiars and Ezekiel.

Edwina's cat is more versatile than we were lead to believe.

No name that I've heard yet. Maybe next episode.

Maria's responses to her interrogation by Gilbert were as consistent as she's always been. She stops violence because she doesn't like it and does so in the way that she wants. This still fits her title we see in the mid-episode title cards - The Willful Witch, The Virgin of Power. Summoning demons and not converting will still get her burned at the stake, though.

Hmm.

I'm still curious about her loss of magic power. This is now the most important plot element and I wonder how it play out. One stray detail that hasn't been explained is how Maria just showed up in the forest one day. She says she's always been a witch. And she doesn't know if she's been baptized. That could be another important detail tied to her magic.

Bernard's total loss of attention in Maria after their quodlibet reminds me of a playboy who just forgets a girl after he beds her. Is this the same dynamic, except from a cleric's perspective? I thought something may have been resolved in that cell after being shown a flash of light and the image of a scale being rebalanced, but maybe that was something happening inside of Bernard. I hope an explanation is forthcoming.

I'm not sure what to make of Galfa trying to kill Joseph now. He's killed a comrade-in-arms during the confusion of battle before, so perhaps Galfa has gotten a taste for this kind of subterfuge. But what's the motive now? He's fulfilled his duties to the Count and to Bernard in capturing Maria, so is killing Joseph just for fun? I hope there is something more going on here than just a revelation of character that befits a betrayal. That doesn't seem as interesting as if this change in Galfa is somehow related to Maria's loss of magic since he was there when it happened.

Maria was rescued, but she's still got to be Maria. If there's a big battle, even with the British being hampered by Viv taking all their weapons to fight Michael, she's got to stop it somehow, magic or no. None of our main characters have died yet, but that may change very soon. This may be a midieval setting, but it's still has Japanese conventions, and a confession of love or friendship is a big death flag. The question is, whose flag will fall?
