Junketsu no Maria - Episode 9
Maria is captured and to be tried as a heretic.
Heh.
Bernard may not be a totally rational person. That's fine. Theology relies on more than just Reason to arrive at the Truth. Besides what can be known from the senses and manipulated by Reason, Inspiration from the Holy Spirit can also interpreted through Reason. Sometimes that spark of inspiration looks pretty scary.
That being said, Maria is still a creature of this World, and while her motivations may be self-centered, there was still Truth in her actions and words. People are incarnations of God too, and the Church of the Heavens under Michael may just not be aware of that.
The mysteries to be resolved in this episode are why Maria lost her magic power and what the image of a rebalanced scale meant during the twin battles of faith between Viv against Michael and Bernard with Maria. We saw in the third episode that God Himself intervened on Joseph's behalf against Michael. Perhaps something similar just happened here. As for Maria's loss of magic, I suspect it has something to do with what Cernunnos warned her about - being forgotten.
Galfa's new mechanical arm isn't just a Swiss Army knife, it's like a whole Swiss Army.
There's something different about Maria's magic loss compared to when she fought Michael in the second episode - none of her familiars were affected by it. Also, they and Ezekiel have already accepted Joseph as their co-master. Joseph and Maria are already a couple, even supernatural beings say so.
Viv should make a familiar of her own. She just keeps borrowing other witches' companions. That cat that was with her during most of the season was just Edwina's familiar.
While we're still talking about familiars, ultimately they can't refuse a direct order from their masters. Look what happened to Ezekiel.
I think Gilbert and Bernard are going to be having a disagreement very soon. The local bishop and theologian may have realized some new article of faith about people's relationship with God and the material World, but a newly confirmed Inquisitor has to defend the Faith as it exists across the whole Body of the Church.
Bernard's new quodlibet (disputation of faith) may be acceptable in the near future, but definitely not in time for Maria's trial for heresy. Priapus has never seen what ecstasy looks like as a holy man knows it.
Hmm.
I can't wait until next episode now. During Bernard's epiphany, we saw that Maria was beginning to tremble. Was she feeling the rush of her magic coming back as Bernard blessed her feet? And the image of the tipping scales was very obvious that something had changed between God and Man and that it would affect Michael's confrontation with Viv. One of the main sources of Authority for the Church is what Jesus told Peter - that whatever he bound on Earth would be bound in Heaven and whatever he loosed on Earth would also be loosed in Heaven. I'm very curious what was decided in that cell occupied by Maria and Bernard.
