Death Parade - Episode 11
Chiyuki gains back her memories with Decim's help. Ginti decides Mayu's fate.
Heh.
Ginti is a dick! Because Mayu had been with him so long, a regular game wasn't going to work, but having her choose to send a stranger's soul to the Void in exchange for Harada's was too cruel and personal. And we found out that Ginti had sent Harada's soul into the Void, even after his act of redemption in trying to save Mayu during their game. Has this Ginti guy sent any soul back for Reincarnation?
Decim had previously explained that the souls leave their dummies during their final elevator ride and now we know what that looks like. Mayu genuinely thought that Harada's soul had reanimated the dummy, which I think was a lie Ginti told her, but the sequence was vague enough to leave a little hope in there. I think the Harada dummy's eyes just popped open during the fall, but they opened in a linked way instead of some obviously disconcerting doll eyelid blink. There's room for interpretation either way, but the two souls finding each other in the void and merging definitely meant that Mayu got her wish.
Nona saw a chance to make something interesting happen because of a bureaucratic snafu and she took it.
Too bad old flowerhead Oculus has found everything out from Clavis. He's about to find out what Nona has been hiding, but I wonder if he'll have as easy a time as he had with Clavis. We haven't seen Nona's special attack powers yet, besides her freakish strength.
All the hints about the show from the opening credits have been shown now.
Pretty. Even the last bit with Decim holding Chiyuki in his arms before the elevators was put into this episode.
Aw. Chiyuki appreciated Decim's heartfelt declaration that he was glad to have met her, but to say such an endearing thing with an emotionless face was a bit of a disappointment. She finally accepted the compliment without expecting more. That's growth in their relationship.
Now we know - Decim likes his spiked drinks shaken, not stirred.
These Information Department employees should open an art gallery.
I could write at least a thousands words on what this piece of abstract art evokes in me in relation to what I know about Chiyuki's life and the artist Quin who assembled this puzzle from her memories. Simply amazing.
Hmm.
I certainly disagree with Ginti's judgment of Mayu, although I can understand how he arrived at it. Knowing that the Void is a death sentence for a soul, Mayu still chose to send a stranger there in exchange for getting her obsession back. If Mayu had done something similar in her actual life, I would agree, but this was a decision made in the afterlife. How fair is that? The sum of a soul's experience should stop at death and be judged accordingly. Mayu's trial was based on her experiences after her death. Her soul was too young. She died by slipping in the bathroom. Her first love was a singer she would never know in real life. What sin did she commit that would warrant being sent to the Void? Send that young soul back for Reincarnation.
Nona had said earlier that Chiyuki's story wasn't that special and that no life is without its share of darkness. I'm not sure how their version of the afterlife treats suicide, but in Christian morality, it is murder. According to society, it's not even a crime, because laws are based on protecting the individual from harm by other individuals. But morally, suicide is still a crime. Those who knew the victim still experience loss and direct anger at the perpetrator. The family and friends still suffer all the emotional effects of a murder, but added on to that is misplaced responsibility. The blame ultimately lies with the person who took his own life, but knowing that doesn't stop those feelings.
In Chiyuki's case, she claims that after she hurt her knee, she felt that all her relationships didn't feel real or deep, but this sounded like classic depression. Her sense of self, that of a skater inspired by a children's book, was shattered with her knee, and she thought she had no alternative. A sad story of depression leading to suicide, but not all that uncommon.
We're almost to the end, and I have no idea what they're going to do for the last episode. Oculus and Nona need to have their confrontation. Decim needs to receive the totality of Chiyuki's memories to judge her, but his own opinion is that the living and non-living need to work together to judge souls. Lots of things tied together can only be resolved together so I'm looking forward to how they do so.
