Naruto Shippuuden - Episode 399

Neji's team is targeted during the first day of the second part of the chuunin exams. The Sand ninjas target one of their own teams.

Heh.

My, what big eyes you have. All the better to blind you when you use your powers.

I wondered what that fisheye lens effect was about when we first saw Team Gai about to head out. It was the big eye girl looking through a drop of water.

I figured Neji was busy making sure the food fight wouldn't get too serious when he was hiding behind the table the night before, but he was actually scanning everybody fighting for their strengths, weaknesses and chakra signatures. What a guy.

That Shira dude was doing the same thing, which is why he took Rock Lee's kick.

As if a Sand Waterfall pit would pose a challenge to Tenten and her big purse.

That girl brings everything with her!

Hmm.

I have to remind myself we're looking at kids during this filler arc. This is only two years after the failed Rescue Sasuke Arc in the pre time-skip story, even when all the kids are dressed as they appear one year later when Naruto comes back to the village. That means all the stupid mean stuff we saw in Konoha probably has analogs in the Sand Village.

We see that with Shira and Rock Lee's circumstances where they can't use any chakra powered techniques, and the scorn that was heaped on them as they trained. Add in Shira being the Kazekage's taijutsu trainer, and those harsh feelings get mixed with jealousy and pettiness. Unfortunately, those feelings are being expressed in dangerous conditions during serious circumstances. Adults should be able to put aside those negative feelings for the sake of a mission, but that's not happening here with Shira's fellow chuunin candidates.

The Sand and the Leaf may be allies, but that's still a new situation, so it's pretty odd that a Leaf team would come to the rescue of a Sand team. Team Gai is no ordinary team, though.

Asuma, Kurenai and Gai have infiltrated the exams area to help protect Gaara while he serves as proctor. I have a feeling Neji is going to help out in this regard later, which might be why he jumped straight to jounin. We'll see how that plays out, but first we have to compare Shira's and Lee's harsh backgrounds and training regimens.
