Sword Art Online II - Episode 1
Japanese players in Gun Gale Online begin dying in real life, and the government wants Kirito-kun to investigate. The sequel to Sword Art Online moves on to a new game, new possibilities, and new ramifications for online life.
Heh.
"Every time I want out, they pull me back in!" In Kirito's case, it took a couple of tugs on his jacket and the promise of payment. The sniper girl apparently has some shorty shorts we're supposed to pay attention to, but this obviously comes at the cost of chest development. Well, it must help if you're lying on your belly all the time... Hurr.
Did not need to see ultra-detailed death-pain face. Although, it seemed like other players wanted to put a bullet right between the eyes of that smug pro player.
Hmm.
This first episode was pure setup for the series. We reconnected with our favorite characters, the main plot made itself known dramatically early on with a skull-faced assassin, we've been introduced to the best side of Kirito's new girl in the game, and we explore the differences between online life and real life again. Is Kirito really the best asset the Japanese government can find to infiltrate a game located on American servers? He's a hack and slash melee guy joining a first person shooter. From the credit end sequence, we see he makes a type of sword to use in the game, but wouldn't it have been better to get a real FPS player? Well, obviously Kikuoka of the Virtual Division has confidence in Kirito's skills in figuring out how to exploit the rules of any MMORPG, even if his play style isn't really supported. I'll look forward to the melee-slash build he'll create in a game for guns.
First Thoughts.
This arc of the Sword Art Online series seems to be a total reset. In the second arc after he escaped SAO, he still had Asuna in the new game, plus his cousin was the new girl that would help him there. Here, I'm curious to see if the same kind of pattern shows up: whether the new girl is someone he knows in real life, and whether someone from a previous game also shows up here. The idea of death in a game causing death in real life has not been seen again since the escape from SAO, with the second arc in ALO being more of a princess rescue fairy tale, so there is more dramatic tension this time around. Also, the issues surrounding pro game players being the main influence on game companies rebalancing skills and stats to encourage build diversity is an interesting one to explore.
It's like this overall story first discovered life, then love, and now money. I'll see if there's enough evocative material here to continue blogging the show, but that will also depend on seeing more of the good-looking characters, or interesting scenes.
