Akame ga Kill! - Episode 1
Our naïve hero from the country gets a quick education about the darkness underneath the sparkling capital city. Sexy, bloody, funny, Akame ga Kill! is an action packed story.
Heh.
That busty onee-san gave our main character a valuable lesson, alright. Too bad his newfound skepticism didn't keep him out of the clutches of that corrupted rich family. The traveling merchants sure were right about the people of the city having hearts like monsters, and twisting the beautiful young lady's face into one helped reinforce that point.
The super-chibi form of our hero being thrown out of the recruiting office gave me Fullmetal Alchemist and Magi vibes. That's a good thing.
Kudos for showing a competent hero, who's also competent enough in battle to know that someone is better than he is.
Mixing violent bloodiness and tortured bodies with gag humor also gave me Fullmetal Alchemist vibes.
It was easy to tell our hero was going to be the butt of many jokes in this show from his first appearance: ahoge.
Summertime means it's time to break out the scissors! That was soooo 2013.
Hmm.
In a pure introductory episode, it's hard to tell where the story will go. We're barely introduced to the main group of people our hero will be spending time with, but we've been given the major theme of the show: things are not as they appear on the surface. The mercenary guards working for the insane rich family talk about the emperor being a child, and thus a puppet to the prime minister, so this must be where the story will eventually go.First Thoughts.
I liked the mix of action, blood, humor, and sexy character designs. I also like how normal our hero looks, like they stuck some gloves, boots, and arm guards on a prep school kid dressed for the weekend. He also seemed to have a good bunch of friends whose personality traits complemented his optimism. Having them die in so horrible a manner should make it difficult to form those same bonds with this new group he falls in with. We'll have to see how that gets shown.
I'll see if there's enough to write about, but there's already enough potential to convince me to watch the whole season. There didn't seem to be an inconsistent note with the tone they've established. Let's see if they keep that going for more than a couple of episodes.
