Mahouka Koukou no Rettousei - Episode 17

The gangsters get desperate trying to cover their bad bet. Don't make Tatsuya mad by picking on his sister. The Fairy of 1st Magic Specialty School flies to victory.

Heh.

This show is like a mystery series, except all the clues are about where the plot is going and how the main character gets out of a locked room. My bro described it perfectly: it's MacGyver set in a magic high school. From the first episode of this arc, we were presented with all the objects and scenes necessary to fill out the story. Sustained flying spell, ancient magic, human experimentation leaving an almost emotionless shell, and a magic toy that can separate into different parts. This all gets thrown at you, and you put together a story with these flying parts within the context of a tournament. All that's left is to let Tatsuya get really serious about protecting Miyuki at the gangsters' hideout.

I thought Masaki's almost lethal spell in the last episode was sabotage, but it looks like it was just the full strength setting because Tatsuya shocked the hell out of him with how close he was getting.

Nice continuity. Tatsuya has to wear a cover on his right ear when he's out and about.

Do not mess with Tatsuya's sister. Just don't.

Leave it to Mayumi to defuse the tension about Tatsuya throwing down in the Inspection Area, and also planting a plausible story to hide the details about sabotage. Although, I don't see Tatsuya getting all that bent out of shape over someone hitting on his little sister...

Erika is shipping Mikihiko and Mizuki hard. Nothing wrong with that.

Tatsuya's Original BAMFsters are just as casual with each other as he is when he's in hunter-killer mode.

Tatsuya wasn't even concerned when "Silver's" flying spell leaked out to the other schools. He already knew you need a big ball of magic stamina to use it for long periods of time, and the safety protocol on it would effectively ground anyone from using any other kind of magic. All according to plan /Aizen.

I'm glad the gangsters think killing a few hundred people for 100 million dollars is the right price. If it were yen, that would be pretty cheap on their part.

Geh.

I thought for sure Tatsuya was going to rip that guy's throat out. He does say that just about the only emotion he has left is getting angry for the sake of his sister. Makes you think that maybe he was an experiment in making a Generator that still had a personality. But they don't seem so tough compared to the crew Tatsuya used to hang out with.

Let me just casually throw you out of the stadium... That guy is Yanagi, supposedly the only one who can use Flash-Casting almost as fast as Tatsuya. We see here that he didn't use a CAD for any of his moves. The Original BAMFsters didn't seem to be too worried about taking down a Generator with his Limiter removed. Oh, Japan. Always unsealing the forbidden power...

But how does Yanagi just happen to be the first guy in the line of sight of No. 17? They do know that the criminal syndicate is operating at the games, so maybe they already had that guy under surveillance.

We don't even get to see what red sweater guy can do. Maybe we'll see it when our BAMF goes BAMF'ing old school when they raid the gangsters and have to get a little more serious against more Generators. I wonder if Fujibayashi Onee-san knows acupuncture...

Hmm.

I think the fun stuff for this arc is over, and Tatsuya getting angry for real is going to happen soon. I did think Masaki might be joining him on his raid, but it looks like the introduction of these Generators, some kind of augmented magic human puppets, will necessitate him joining up with the Original BAMFsters from his military days.

We've gotten enough hints from the beginning of the show that Tatsuya didn't have a full range of emotions, not even flinching when Erika kicked him in the shin, and the flashbacks of his being an engineered humanoid. These Generators give more hints at what's going on in the Mahoukaverse, and Tatsuya's origins. I'm getting a Pinocchio vibe here, with a puppet wanting to become a real boy.

Also, the story surprised me a bit, while still being consistent for the motivation of its main character. Tatsuya wasn't going to go after the Headless Dragon because it hurt some his fellow students, but when they went after his sister, well! That was the context of his raid on the terrorists because Miyuki really was in the middle of all those attacks. I was getting ahead of myself with wanting to see more BAMF'ing, but Tatsuya needs his reasons.

But before we see all that, I want to see BAMFsters versus Gangsters. It's BAMF'ing time!
