10 Second Anime - Hibike! Euphonium - Episode 3

10 Second Anime - Hibike! Euphonium - Episode 3
The new band members choose their instruments. The band club's first ensemble piece exposes painful history from last year.

Heh.

New kids have to learn how to play instruments, and using Hazuki learning how to sustain a note was great attention to detail.

There appeared to be a link between the girls hiking up their skirts and the lazy bullying attitude that infected the band.

Mr. Taki sized up this group pretty well. He gave them the task of learning a very simple ensemble piece and they couldn't even do that. Haruka doesn't have the backbone to lay down the law and Asuka is too spacy to lead.

Speaking of spacy, Asuka gave the audience even more material to appreciate her energy.

And that was one more "blow me" joke to add to the tally. Kumiko asked the right question - why did her euphonium have a kansai accent?

Some of the students liked assigning a personality to their instruments. Sapphire was struck by her contra-bass' eyes. Hazuki abandoned Tuba-kun and went for the chupacabra pun.

Yeah, Tuba Cabra!

Sapphire revealed herself to be a true band geek. She even wastes money trying to collect musical instrument toys from those mystery ball machines. She already had Sax-kun and Horn-chan!

Reina showed off her angry walk. Stay mad just a little bit longer there, Reina...

Hmm.

There's some actual uncomfortable history for this band club. Mr. Taki may or may not know of it, but he's slicing like a hammer to wake the lazy bums up that they can't just coast and blow off practice if they want to even participate in their usual events that have nothing to do with competing at the National Competition level.

The lazy seniors last year made the serious first-years quit in disgust, which is why there were so few current second-years. This situation was why Aoi voted for the "fun route," because she knew that lazy screw-up element was still in the club.

A large ensemble may have many parts, but it's still made up of individuals and sections. The individuals have to practice on their own and the sections have to practice together. If those two levels have any shortcomings, it's only going to get amplified when they all get together as a whole orchestra. Like Mr. Taki said, "don't waste my time," which was a harsh way of admonishing them not to waste theirs.

I wonder if this lazy element will be made to leave so that the serious musical students who left will be brought back in. There was some good story-telling going on as Kumiko's group noticed all the leftover instruments and the other students not practicing. Leave it to a guy, Shuuichi, to find out the story instead of the usual feminine route of not causing strife.

The other route the story may go is just to make do with the students they have and help them find their motivation. I'm leaning against this because of how the club president was being pressured by the lazy ones. I don't see them changing their ways.

That's pretty horrible that the seniors last year caused all this trouble, but they're not around to take responsibility for it. There may be a parallel between those actions and Kumiko's relationship with her older sister, who was not so keen on her playing the euphonium in the house, when they used to play their horns together.

This is definitely not after school tea time. There's lots more meat to this story that's slowly being revealed with lots of silliness and sentimentality along the way.
