Yowamushi Pedal - Limit Break - Episode 20 - 10 Second Anime

Onoda and Manami recall their vow at the aquarium and keep it in the last 2 km of the Inter-High Road Race.

BREAK.20 — “At the Aquarium in May”

Meh.

Yowamushi Pedal will take six episodes to cover two kilometers of racing by backfilling emotional investment through flashbacks. An editor tried to save weak writing with a simple question: Why should we care? A common fault in the shounen battle tournament and sports genres is the need to manufacture more emotional impact than players needing to win. The authors are impatient to arrive at the action scenes, and the flashbacks are afterthoughts. Better planning would put these scenes in a more chronologically relevant place and then refer to them in flashbacks. But what about creating a flashback out of whole cloth? That’s too far. And annoying.

Cycling Porn.

  • Onoda’s fast pedaling style helps him accelerate while sitting down.
  • Manami’s Look 595 frame is from 2006. That’s how out-of-touch Yowamushi Pedal is with the modern peloton.
  • Manami’s Campagnolo shifters give us all the sparking gear changes.

Heh.

Of course. Onoda wandered off and lost his way in the aquarium. Weak. Manami appeared after Onoda dropped water bottles. He offers Onoda his phone, but this is a repeat of their first meeting by vending machines when Onoda needed a drink. Onoda promised (to himself) to return Manami’s water bottle at the Inter-High Road Race. Here, Manami and Onoda vow to race hard against each other somewhere on the road course. They had hoped to do so when their private contest would not matter to their respective team’s goals. Oops. Now their vow matters to winning the Inter-High outright!

Look! Girls! Yay! Toudou and Makishima have a chance to hang out. They already had a bike climbing reunion, so this scene is a generational reference to Manami and Onoda. This scene also did the flashback-emotion device correctly. Aw, shoot. Kuroda also set up a flashback episode for next time on Yowamushi Pedal.
