A lugged chromoly bike with Dura-Ace components resembles Onoda's first racing bike for Yowamushi Pedal. Then Teshima rides an unbranded Anchor, and Ashikiba is on an unbranded Trek.

Tall Ashikiba transferred to Teshima's school in fifth grade. Some of the boys hate the attention the girls give Ashikiba. Of course. Teshima became fast friends with him through their shared love of music. Then they discovered expensive road bicycles. We see how Teshima and Ashikiba's philosophies on athleticism developed. Teshima is the genius of grinding work, while Ashikiba senses the changes in vibrations to inspire him.

Teshima had a talent for making others into winners, even back then. He did that for Ashikiba and then Aoyagi in high school. Ashikiba was an airhead back then too. Then he and Teshima fought over race tactics and had a falling out. But they worked it out, so Ashikiba could become the King of the Mountains. Fast forward to today, and Teshima wants that prize for himself.
