Episode 1 – “It’s You and Me, Senpai~”
First Thoughts.
When the production staff of Don’t Toy With Me, Miss Nagatoro (Ijiranaide, Nagatoro-san) announced the second season in 2021, they included the main characters’ voice actors. That was reassuring, but there was cause for concern because the producers changed animation studios. OLM will be animating the show instead of Telecom Animation Film. Thankfully, with two key staffers, the scriptwriter and character designer, OLM holds to the look and feel of the first season.
We can see this best in how the anime shows us light beams and paintbrush-styled scenes that look like Senpai’s impressionistic memories of Nagatoro. The audience needs to pay attention to when this perspective appears in Don’t Toy With Me, Miss Nagatoro because Senpai will paint them later. These are the moments when Senpai falls deeper in love with the abrasive Nagatoro-san. Hopefully, the audience will too.
Hmm.
Don’t Toy With Me, Miss Nagatoro, in its first season, caused an online controversy about bullying. Then Nagatoro and Senpai settled into a routine of teasing, taking it too far, and mutual forgiveness. That’s the new pattern with fanservice machines. We saw similar dynamics in the anime The Maid I Hired Recently is Mysterious and again in the second season of Uzaki-chan Wants to Hang Out!. Miss Nagatoro combines the tan skin of Lilith and the constant cry of “Senpai!” from Uzaki-chan into a third consecutive anime season of fanservice and backfiring teasing.
All three shows had the main girl use a repeating theme for their teasing attacks. Lilith tried to make Yuuri embarrassed about how much he paid attention to her. That always backfired because he loudly admitted it. Uzaki-chan used cutting insults on Sakurai’s preference to spend time by himself. That backfired when Sakurai proved he had friends and pointed out that Uzaki-chan tried to conceal that she wanted to spend time with him. Both Lilith and Uzaki-chan teased their targets over a weakness they perceived. The boomerang attack came when their weaknesses comedically came to light. Miss Nagatoro follows the same formula.
Now that Senpai sees through Nagatoro’s physical and emotional attacks as signs of affection, the pair have found a groove of a budding romance. If this continues, Miss Nagatoro will turn into a slice-of-life fanservice comedy with insults and head pats. Where’s the fun in that? I can’t wait to see how the new characters we saw in the previews upset Senpai and Nagatoro’s prickly relationship.
Heh.
Uh, who are these people? Miss Nagatoro starts us off inside a shoujo manga. Does Senpai wish he were like this domineering, spectacled student council president? The mousy secretary girl gets the infamous kabedon (wall-slam). Is the chin-in-hand maneuver next? Yeah! Uh oh. Mousy Girl Ai caught the President cheating on an exam! Haha! She turned the tables on him. This looks like Miss Nagatoro now. The best relationships are built on a foundation of blackmail and extortion. I guess.
And we’re back to Don’t Toy With Me, Miss Nagatoro. Senpai recognizes himself in that manga story. Has Senpai realized his masochism switch turned on a while back? Yay! Nagatoro has arrived! The static shots and light beams look the same as in the first season. Great. We’re starting with patent leather shoe fetish jokes. Nagatoro found Senpai’s shoujo manga! She reads it too! She relates to one of the characters in there as Senpai does. Guess which one! Oho. Senpai can throw shade back at Nagatoro now. Nagatoro wants payback! Here comes the shoe fetish thing. Ack! Spilled water on brand-new penny loafers! Look at how much Nagatoro wants Senpai to lick her shoes. Good. Senpai, be normal. Wipe water up with your handkerchief. Sheesh, Nagatoro.
The opening theme of Don’t Toy With Me, Miss Nagatoro borrows many scenes from the first season. Holding hands! Miss Nagatoro will have a fun second season.
Cute! Walking to school together. There we go! Nagatoro called Senpai “creepy” for the first time this season. Her wiggly arms crack me up. Right. Nagatoro is a “nice girl.” Ha! She said the Don’t Toy With Me, Miss Nagatoro‘s episode title. A smack to the head! Nagatoro claims it’s “the most fundamental of all greetings.” Sure. Oh, she has more. The cheek poke, the knee bump, and the thigh thwack. Ohoho. The most effective one is the back squeeze! This is way too much flirting for a walk to school.
Blackmail! But how would Nagatoro know she got a rise out of Senpai? Did she check? He can throw it back at her. And here’s where Nagatoro’s teasing backfires on her. Headpats instead of head smacks. The back squeeze will become a front squeeze! Well, Senpai lived a short but fulfilling life. Second base, yo! And with an assist from Yosshii, the Nagatoro bomb defused itself. Also, high school girls don’t do any of those physical greetings Nagatoro inflicted on Senpai. She reserves them for “flirting.” Senpai imagines what would happen if he patted Nagatoro’s head in the Don’t Toy With Me, Miss Nagatoro eye catches.
Nagatoro and Senpai occupy their usual scene. His sketching and her bothering him. The art club room’s air conditioner makes Nagatoro chilly, but she has the answer. Oh, don’t you dare, Miss Nagatoro! Long, tan legs in thigh highs! Will Nagatoro show us the zettai ryouiki? Yes, yes. Girls grit their teeth through the cold for fashion’s sake. Senpai doesn’t remember Nagatoro ever covering up her legs. Uh oh. Nagatoro heard the disappointment in Senpai’s voice. Dude. How is this even close to punishment? “Put these tights on my tan, trim, bare legs, you creep!” Extra spicy flirting, that’s what this is. Too much stimulation for Nagatoro. She successfully fished for a compliment, though. Ha! Nagatoro said “tights fetish” in English!
Yay! It’s fun to hang out with the Nagatoro friends again. Conveyor belt sushi restaurant, let’s go! The girls are treating Senpai today because they made a lot of money selling the Nekotoro bag straps at the cultural festival. We saw that in the first season finale of Don’t Toy With Me, Miss Nagatoro. Senpai’s paranoid mind thinks the girls are taking advantage of his plate-grabbing skills. Nagatoro quickly dispelled that with a face full of boobs. And service! No picking on, bullying, or teasing tonight. Well, some good-natured, affectionate teasing. Yosshii didn’t want to part with any of her fried chicken. Uh oh. Nagatoro doesn’t like how much attention her friends are giving Senpai. Ugh. Nagatoro’s naming sense for sushi combos grossed everyone out. Senpai enjoyed the dish, so that’s what mattered.
The ending theme has Senpai and the Nekotoros dancing in cat outfits. Fun!
Next time, the art club president blows Senpai’s mind with her thoughts on nature and nudity. He and Nagatoro go to the zoo!
