Lycoris Recoil showed us the story behind Chisato's artificial heart. She was a genius of gun-fu with a congenital heart defect, so Mika convinced his lover Shinji from the Alan Institute to install an experimental machine heart. It would only last until she was eighteen, but Chisato would graduate as a Lycoris by then. Shinji's assistant ensured that Chisato could not recharge her heart's battery, so Chisato only had two months to live.
Takina wanted to give Chisato a happy memory before she died. Takina planned the perfect date! Chisato gave her the perspective that life doesn't allow plans to work out, so you should be flexible enough to enjoy what you have. My theory: Shinji's actions wanted to give Chisato a carrot-and-stick approach. He disabled Chisato's artificial heart to convince her to use gun-fu to kill people. But Shinji is a softie. His Alan Institute had perfected a new blood pump that he would install into Chisato no matter what she decided. But Majima threw a wrench into his plans!
