Shouko Komi, whose name in Japanese means "old glass," captivates the entire school with her beauty, grace, and bearing. Strangely, no one has heard her voice.
Hitohito Tadano, whose name in Japanese means "common person," realized that Komi didn't hold herself above other people. She just finds it difficult to talk because she has soul-crushing social anxiety. Tadano started his friendship with Komi when they conversed by writing on a chalkboard. She's still shy, though.
The next day, Tadano confirmed that he was Komi's first friend. He wants to help her gather more, but the narrator confirms something the audience should have expected. The names of the characters describe their roles and personalities. If Tadano is the "commoner" in school, that means he's the only ordinary person there. Komi will have tough times navigating the quirks of her potential friends.
The opening credits show Komi having fun with the first friends she makes at her strange school.
