Episode 4 – “You're All Red, Senpai / Senpai, You Could Be a Little More...”

Nagatoro’s friends show what is real bullying in Nagatoro-san. It’s one step away from what Senpai suffered in his younger days, because Gamo-chan isn’t targeting him directly. She’s teasing Senpai to score points against Nagatoro. We can tell the difference in how Nagatoro teases Senpai because she wants to pull him out of his comfort zone. She does that in ways he’s not ready for, but it’s not vindictive teasing. She wants him to be a better man because she sees genuine talent and passion for his aims.
On the other hand, Gamo-chan wants to tease Nagatoro through Senpai. It looks like she’s being mean to Senpai to get those genuine reactions out of him that triggers Nagatoro’s own sadistic streak, but I see Nagatoro-san doing something else. Gamo-chan is genuinely curious in what her friend sees in this weak nerd. There’s some jealousy tied in there too, because Nagatoro has been spending less time after school with her gyaru friends to spend time with Senpai. What makes him so much better?
Of course, the flashy gal emotional esthetic clashes heavily with an introverted artist’s sensitivity, so even good-natured ribbing from Nagatoro’s friends, who aren’t his own friends yet, will feel like psychological torture. Is the reason Nagatoro wants Senpai to become assertive quickly so they can all hang out together without anyone’s feelings getting hurt? She might not be able to articulate her motives like that at such an immature age, but Nagatoro is obviously feeling the pressure between being protective of Senpai and being jealous that he allows other girls to mess around with him too. Nagatoro wants to be Senpai’s exclusive Big Tease.

Nagatoro wants to wash hands together with Senpai in the Nagatoro-san prologue. Is this just a way for us to watch a metaphorical handjob? Nice and sudsy. Ha! Nagatoro went “there.” It’s also a good excuse for Nagatoro to hold hands with Senpai.
The first half of Nagatoro-san starts with Gamo-chan and Yoshi bothering Senpai as he eats lunch in the art club’s room. Nagatoro won’t like this. Yoshi is such a follower. Now, this is bullying. Has Senpai grown more assertive since Nagatoro started spending time with him? Let’s find out. The pair just watched Senpai eat his lunch. Is that it? Ah. Here comes the teasing. Hey, he started saying them out loud! Nice hair, light step, cool kick. She liked that last one! Nagatoro’s turn. Senpai has amusing facial expressions and twitchy eyes. Aw. She didn’t praise his art.
Time to pick a nice pose for Senpai’s sketch. But first, Nagatoro wants to see all those amusing facial expressions. Senpai can’t start his sketch if Nagatoro keeps teasing him with her nice legs and open blouse. That’s a nice development from Nagatoro-san. Senpai prefers still-life drawing, so how about a napping Nagatoro? Nagatoro’s hair went into hyper detailed mode. This is when she’s the most honest with Senpai. He could have gotten so much further with Nagatoro if he had the guts. Truth!
Senpai isn’t happy with how his sketch turned out. Nagatoro liked it, though, so he gets a reward! Hoho! Senpai thinks Nagatoro is kissing him! Couldn’t be… It wasn’t! Still, she praised him. How does that feel, Senpai?
Next time, Nagatoro drags Senpai around with her. Could it be a date?
