Egan Bernal, the 2019 Tour de France winner, is coming back from a back injury that derailed his 2020 season. The Giro is his first test of the rehabilitation and physiotherapy he undertook during his time off the bike and he hoped to do well against his general classification rivals. He did so well on the gravel section up to the mountain top finish at Campo Felice, he didn't realize that he overtook the breakaway survivors at 200 meters to go and won the stage. That's why he didn't attempt a victory gesture or salute when he finished. Disbelief turned to joy and gratitude because the stage victory marked his first race victory at a Grand Tour and he rode into the maglia rosa as well.
