Elia Viviani reads La Gazzetta dello Sport before the start of Stage 19 of the Giro on May 28, 2021.
The maglia rosa takes its color from the pink pages of the sports newspaper La Gazzetta dello Sport, which organized the first Giro d'Italia and each one thereafter since 1909. The sports daily began in 1896 to cover the first Olympics in Athens, Greece. The first maglia rosa saw its appearance on the overall leader, Learco Guerra, during the second stage of the 1931 Giro d'Italia.
