#64 – “Declaration of War”
Hmm.
Shingeki no Kyojin, through Tybur’s accessed memories from the Warhammer Titan, reveals that nine Eldian clans controlled an individual Titan Power. The Tyburs still control the Warhammer Titan and the Reisses kept the Founding Titan until Grisha Jaeger stole it and gave it to Eren. This makes me wonder which Titan the Ackermans controlled or which one the Oriental clan controlled. I guess that the Ackermans originally had the Jaw Titan because of its speed and agility. But which family owned the Attacking Titan?
We waited several weeks between this Shingeki no Kyojin episode and the last one. It was impressively effective to signal how a new story with a new Eren begins now. The parallel scene with Eren and Reiner in the background of Willy Tybur’s stage production was an awesome device to connect a larger story between nations moving to a new conflict from a fake past to the smaller, personal one between Eren, who saw his mother die, and the man responsible for the events leading up to it. Eren’s response is different from Willy’s declaration of war – join me to save the world.
Heh.
Flashback to Reiner, Bertholdt, and Annie on Paradis before they start attacking again. It’s a way to tie it to Reiner who needs Eren to judge him for being responsible for his mother’s death. Eren is so casual. Yo, what’s up, Reiner? It’s been four years, huh?
Willy Tybur needs to make a WWI PowerPoint presentation, so stage play it is. Ooh. An oriental clan member makes a familiar visit to Willy before his production. Let’s hope we get more information on how Mikasa relates to these people. Pay attention. Lady Kiyomi isn’t sticking around for the play. Meanwhile, Eren explains to Reiner that he is holding a whole city block hostage. Eren is no longer a Shouty McShouterson. I like this Eren! Low key showing Reiner he cut his hand already. He can explode at any time of his choosing.
We’re saying goodbye to the Paradis Island infiltration part of Shingeki no Kyojin’s story. Leonhart and Braun families sit together for Tybur’s play. Hoover the father passed away. Mr. Leonhart believes Annie is still alive. He’s right that we saw Annie trap herself in crystal, but what’s happened to her in the last four years? Not-Hitler attends this play too.
This tall young man is mysterious. Is that you, Armin? Tybur gives us all the answers so we can concentrate on different information for Titan War II. The true events of the end of the Great Titan War had nothing to do with a Marleyan hero named Helos. King Fritz wanted to stop fighting, colluded with a Tybur to sell fiction, and imprisoned the majority of the Eldians on Paradis Island. If they royal family had control of the Founding Titan, that pacifist ideology convinced the successors who used mind control to keep the population suppressed.
Eren’s quiet conversation with Reiner is riveting. He knows Reiner wanted to save the world. He does too. That tall, stranger soldier separates the Titan Warriors. Is he a Tybur? I’m still leaning toward an Eren ally. Ah. Pieck says he looks familiar. The Cart Titan was on Paradis Island to collect Zeke and Reiner. Har. Pieck is like a school idol with the tank brigade. One fan moved ahead of the others! Two Titans stuck down a well.
Falco realized Reiner’s old friend is from Paradis Island. Tybur reveals that King Fritz’s intention was to make peace and the Titans never left the island to attack. Which was fine while the royal family held the Founding Titan. But someone else has that now! Things start to unravel for the Marley security forces. There’s a short woman next to the actors and a tall Tybur soldier. Is she the Warhammer Titan?
Oh damn. Eren is in full control of his healing powers. Finally! Tybur thinks the Walls of Paradis are millions of Colossal Titans. How does this work? Something new! If that’s a power the Colossal Titan has, then Armin will be important. Eren takes Reiner’s argument for himself. If you need to save the world, you don’t have much choice in your actions. And that’s why Eren is in Marley. To save the world. Eren “vaguely remembers” vowing to destroy all Titans. Sorry about that. When he came to Marley, he saw Eldians kept behind walls just like he was. They were the same. He’s also just like Reiner because he wants to be a hero.
Here we go, here we go! Do it, Eren! Keep going until you destroy your enemies! We’re back, we’re all the way back to Shingeki no Kyojin! Next time, Attacking Titan vs. Warhammer Titan. Who ya got?
