Elaina wanted to travel the world like her hero Nike the traveling witch in the famous book The Adventures of Nike. She studied hard and quickly became the youngest apprentice witch in history. Strangely, none of the witches in her country wanted to take her on to recognize her as a full and proper witch.
Elaina overheard her parents talking about a strange witch dubbed the Stardust Witch living in the forest nearby, so Elaina thought she would see if this witch would handle her apprenticeship. Fran the Stardust Witch said yes, but didn't teach her any magic for a month, only asking her to do mundane chores, like killing spiders in the bathroom.
When Fran thought Elaina had held in her frustration for too long, she challenged her to a magic test, which was a full-blown duel. Fran defeated Elaina easily and confessed that Elaina's parents had tasked her with training their daughter how to deal with setbacks and failure, because she hadn't up until that moment. Elaina's mom is sneaky! Eventually, Elaina passed her final test in defeating Fran and the Stardust Witch recognized Elaina as the Ashen Witch (for her hair color). Elaina's dad was sad to see her go on the journey she had been preparing for so long. Elaina's mom didn't seem too surprised, but asked her to be safe and come visit once in a while.
