Subaru's second trial was called "Behold an Unthinkable Present," which showed him the immediate aftermaths of all deaths he suffered and how his friends suffered his loss. A fake Rem comforted him, but he realized it was someone else when she did not cheer him on and make him not give up. Rem really loves him, so she's the one who's hardest on him too.
Echidna chose that moment when she thought Subaru was weakest to send Carmilla the Witch of Lust to give up on his quest to make it easier for him to enter a contract with the Witch of Greed. The other witches immediately showed up to express their disapproval of Echidna's negotiating tactics without full disclosure of the price Subaru would pay for such a contract.
Echidna explained in a log rant with her arms held aloft about what she wanted from Subaru and what she would give him. Everything. She's the Witch of Greed, after all. I was just impressed how long she held her arms up and would not be surprised if this pose becomes a future Echidna figurine.
The other Witches held their breath in anticipation of Subaru's answer, which came in the form of question about her contract with Beatrice. Echidna had no idea who Beatrice's future someone would be. She just wanted to see who Beatrice would choose. Beatrice's 400 years of self-imprisonment was just as good an outcome for the Witch of Greed. At the moment Subaru gave his full-throated denial of Echidna's contract, Satella the Witch of Envy joined the Witch's Tea Party. What a cliffhanger!
