The UCI restriction for feeding a rider from a car is during the first 30 km and last 20 km of a race. On certain courses, the race judges will define different restrictions, like a long mountain top finish or hot weather conditions. On the 2020 Giro's Stage 3, the climb to the finish line on Mount Etna was 18.6 km, so the final feed line was at the 10 km to go mark.
Giovanni Visconti of Vini Zabù - Brado - KTM was in the breakaway with eventual stage winner Jonathan Caicedo of EF Education First when his sport director Luca Scinto tried to give him his last feed of the stage. When the race commissaire's car denied his request to pass Visconti a water bottle, because they had already passed over the line by 200 meters, he threw the water bottle down in frustration. Note how he opened the top of the bottle to allow all the water to splash out with a big pop instead of throwing down a full brick of water, like the one which caused Geraint Thomas's hard crash during the neutral start in a bumpy downhill section of the start town of Enna. This is not the first full bidon this man has thrown down in anger.
