Filippo Ganna, the young Italian riding for Ineos Grenadiers, fulfilled his promise already as the winner of the Stage 1 time trial in Palermo and the Stage 14 time trial in Valdobbiadene as the World Champion Time Trialist. He has also risen to the occasion of winning stages for Team Ineos after the abandonment of their overall leader contender Geraint Thomas, who had to withdraw with a broken pelvis, by taking the win on the hilly Stage 5 and wearing the blue KOM jersey for four stages.
