The restrictions and discouragements of spectators along the route of road bike races during the rescheduled season due to COVID-19 has made race organizers find creative ways in letting interested fans appreciate and participate in their events. In the Tour de France, the route on one stage shared the road with a commuter rail line for many miles, so a special commemorative ride on this particular route between stations during the peloton's time on the road was a nice entrepreneurial way to watch the race from a unique perspective.
The Giro took that idea a step further on the route of Stage 11, whose coastal route shared the same space with an Italian railroad for the majority of the course between Porto Sant'Elpidio and Rimini. Special trains wrapped in Giro d'Italia themes traveled the rails at the same speed as the peloton for many minutes to allow travelers to watch the race in person from the safety of a train car.
