The first big climb of the day, the Col de la Hourcère, made its first appearance on the Tour on Stage 9, however it was its second scheduled appearance. It was supposed to be a feature of Stage 16 from Tarbes to Pau in 1995, but the Tour and the riders neutralized the race and made a procession to mourn Fabio Casartelli, who had died the day before on the descent of the Col de Portet d'Aspet.
