The mountainous Stage 13 took the Tour through the extinct volcanoes of the Auvergne region of France. The stage had a hilltop finish at Puy Mary Cantal, one of those extinct volcanoes. "Puy" is the French word for a volcanic hill and ancient lava rocks are a standard building stone in the area. The Cathedral of Our Lady of the Assumption of Clermont-Ferrand is the largest structure in the world built entirely of basalt, which took over 600 years to finish construction, from 1248 to 1884.
