It's the first time a stage at the Tour has traveled from one island to another, requiring long bridges to get the peloton to race across the French mainland for the majority of the course. Showcasing how special the island to island course is, the bridges to Ré island and Oléron island are the 2nd and 3rd longest in France, at 2926.5m and 2862m respectively. Only the bridge above the Loire river in Saint-Nazaire (3356m) is longer.
