Episode 7 – “Until the End, Yui Yuigahama Will Continue Watching Over Them.”
Hmm.
I loved the unexpected twist Oregairu gave us when Hachiman visited the handwaving president for help on his prom planning. He expected Tamanawa to use more American business jargon, but instead he received a rap battle challenge. Orimoto the Aru Girl gave all the aru’s necessary for her turn as a hype man. All the handwaving between Hachiman and Tamanawa happened as we would have expected, but just not to the beat of a funky bass.
Hachiman, in a rare occasion, acted like an unsure teenager when he was reluctant to talk to Hayato about involving the Captain Committee for help with organizing his prom. It was a small reminder that Hayato is supposed to be the chosen consort for Yukino because of family connections and that Hachiman doesn’t have any other strong bonds with her except for their friendly and unspoken romantic ones. For someone who cynically opposes the rules and roles of society, Hachiman still feels its pressure. He’s young yet. He still has time to become an enigmatic yet charismatic leader. Also, he just missed being around Yukino and wanted to sit with her. That’s being true to his heart too.
Heh.
Zaimokuza’s attendants, er, friends from the gaming club are Hatano and Sagami, your quintessential otaku types. Ha. Zaimokuza explains Hachiman exactly – “He always takes a roundabout way to his goals that really makes no sense to anyone else!” The otakus are in on the plan since they get to dance with girls next year and get their parents off their backs about their hobbies. Hachiman bonds with Sagami over embarrassing family members. Yui feels relief that Hachiman meant himself to his little sister. Yui doesn’t like the idea of Hachiman begging Iroha for prom favors next year, though. Hachiman claims the two nerds will get addicted to Iroha’s trashiness and wickedness… Yui did not expect that last part. Hachiman knows how to motivate these gaming types.
Ah. Hachiman’s idea for getting the PTA’s attention and final disapproval is making the prom for many schools. Yui suggests the handwaving dude’s school. Hachiman reluctantly agrees to getting his opinion. It helps to have a popular girl like Yui involved, because she knows where the high school power structures are. Hachiman’s fake prom committee will leech prestige from the Captain Committee, the group that represents all the school clubs. Ugh. Hachiman will have to ask Hayato for help.
Hachiman heads out on Komachi’s birthday. If Hachiman is memorizing business jargon loan words, he’s meeting the handwaving guy. What is up with the bangs blowing? Oh boy, here we go. Aru, aru! Tamanawa freaks Hachiman out by not using his business jargon. Not only that, he claims Hachiman’s proposal is too abstract because it lists many possible events instead of laying them out in visual terms.
Ah what? Hahaha! Social event committee rap battle! Mad props to the translator making English rhymes. Yui had to record Hachiman spit words at Tamanawa. This is a good comedy bit, but there’s advice that Hachiman needs to listen to. He can’t half-ass the event with vague and suggested programs. He’ll need to be specific and make a genuine plan. He still needs to develop a poison pill for his almost-real prom. Oh damn. Orimoto shot down Tamanawa if Hachiman isn’t joining them for hanging out after their meeting.
Yahallo will be the official greeting! Can’t say no to a pretty girl. Hachiman is a manipulative bastard, alright. Yui disapproves. Ha! Zaimokuza is good with chuuni names, so “Sobu High School Prom Saiko Project” has many puns in it but still sounds official.
Aw. Hachiman let Yukino waylay him on his way to talk to Hayato. They miss each other. She’s drinking his coffee brand! More aw. Yui feels like she’s intruding on their moment together. Yui is so bold. She asked Yukino if she was avoiding her. No. But these three usually only see each other at the Service Club room. Yui and Yukino aim to address their “wishes” after the prom stuff is over. We’ll see about that. Hachiman looks at the two hugging each other, hoping for something impossible – a way for all of them to be happy together.
Next time, it looks like Hachiman is going to mess something up.
