Episode 5 - "The Night Before Battle"

Hmm.

We're back on the Human side of the gate that's about to fail in SAO, and it's pretty much a deep breath episode before we're stuck in all-out battle. All these people got perspective about their fight with Kirito after 6 months, except Eldrie. Fanatio has accepted she's a beautiful lady and is starting to flaunt it. It's just too bad we'll only get to see her charms besides makeup on her pretty face in the opening credits.

It was a bit rough to see Ronie and Tiese meet Kirito again. Their attempted rape, sexual assault, and false imprisonment was the whole reason Eugeo and Kirito ended up in a place they could tear down the arbitrary enforcement of laws set up by the pontifex. Alice had no information on the crimes of those two, because that wasn't her job. It's great to see how far she has come from the person who just slapped Eugeo the first time she met him.

There were death flags everywhere, as is the rule when a big battle is about to start, but there were some life flags. Kirito's "willpower" is on pure reflex right now, so it appears not even someone as strong as Bercouli can hurt him. Asuna needs to get in the game quick to "forgive" him. Uh, he'll also need to get his arm back so he can dual-wield. That's related to the other life flag — Eugeo is somehow "alive" in his sword. Perhaps he'll only be returning in a way that heals the broken sword so Kirito can go broken-game OP on the Dark Territory forces. Whatever the case, Eugeo isn't really gone, and I can see Alice's memories from her past playing a role in this.

Heh.

Dragon brothers happy to be reunited. Eldrie not so much.

10 of 31 Integrity Knights are out of action from Chudelkin's retuning. The rest are on patrol or in the capital, leaving only 13 at the Eastern Gate.

Looks like Kirito can take care of himself, whether his soul is there or not. Eldrie is still a bit jealous and mad at Kirito for beating him at swordplay and getting Alice's regard and attention.

Don't fall in love with that guy, Alice! Ah well, Kirito's harem grows again.

Aw. Tiese and Ronie are going to have a sad reunion. Who put Eugeo's sword on the ground like that? Kirito? Eugeo spoke to Tiese? Kirito is going to have all his old friends show up for the final confrontation with Emperor Psycho. Eh? They can't admit they're in love with their mentors? Saving them from rape is a pretty good excuse to have deeper feelings than what they had before.

Bercouli brags for Kirito, saying he couldn't have beaten him. Kirito has the same or more combat experience than he does, the life and death kind. Bah, Alice had to get interrupted right before she told Bercouli that Kirito is an outsider with a real soul, which is how he got all that experience.

Nice. Fanatio looking hot for her man. Now, Fanatio gets to brag for Kirito. Fanatio is getting back to her true self instead of reacting to others' prejudices about women fighters. She should have just stayed beautiful and pound those bigots' asses even harder. I guess she'll do that now. Fanatio called it her "trivial obsessions." There's that new perspective.

Fanatio wonders if she does "this or that," he'll wake up… I want to see "this or that!" Alice rejects! Bercouli had his own harem troubles, with lover and daughter types fighting for his attention. He also knows how to run away like a harem master.

The battle plan is a death box. Using physical attacks and consumable healing because Alice will have used up all available material in the canyon to attack the invaders.

Death flags everywhere, but I think Alice's are all boomerangs. Poor Eldrie… he's got a hot childhood friend waiting for him, if he lives.

It's about time we meet these other Integrity Knights from the opening credits and I want to see DIL again.
