Tour de France 2019 - 7/23/2019 - Stage 16 - Nîmes / Nîmes (177 km) - The peloton crosses the Pont du Gard © A.SO./Pauline BALLET
Nîmes is known as the French Rome because it boasts an arena built in the 1st century and and a three-tier aqueduct called the Pont du Gard. The Pont du Gard will also be the location of the start for Stage 17. Incidentally, Nîmes is where the fabric of denim was created, originally called "serge de Nîmes," where serge is a type of twill fabric. Dungaree, which had been made in India for hundreds of years was already famous for being a hardy cotton fabric, but it was at Nîmes that the textile industry in the mid-1800's combined indigo-dyed thread with plain cotton, creating the denim fabric we know today.
