Hikari celebrates her 16th birthday. The Diving Club attends a hillside burn off at a ski resort, meeting Kokoro there.
Episode 11 - "The Story of Cold, Flames, and Well Wishes"
Hmm.
I called it! Kokoro is a boy! The show did its damnedest convince me otherwise, like Kokoro dressing as the cutest boy in 6th grade apparently, but we finally got the confirmation of my speculation. And Kotori is his sister too! Called that! She's probably the one dressing him in all these cutesy "boy" clothes since she made him dress up as a magical girl for Halloween. Grow a pair already, Kokoro! I suppose that was the point of him participating in the burn off festival, being encouraged by his grandpa and his dad, who was also an event organizer. Stand up to your sister! Dress like a man!
Thankfully, we were fully back to slice of life stuff here, Futaba and Kotori's reunion notwithstanding. This way, we can contemplate Hikari's birthday as a sign of time marching on, see how the burn-off festival is a symbol or the changing seasons, and how that also means meeting new people as familiar ones have to move on.
The best part of this show, besides Kokoro being so pissed at being mistaken for a girl who just wants to be macho for some reason, was how assertive Futaba was as the Big Sister type. I loved it! Futaba definitely is the reference for the "Advance" in the title of this season and it will also refer to her getting her Advanced Diving Certification.
Aw. This show is really coming to an end. The Ninomiya twins are graduating, but we'll get two new kids coming in with Kodama and Kotori. Time really does move on.
Heh.
Hikari yoshi! On her 16th birthday! Good call back to the first season.
But she got sick! Oh no!
Ohime cat is so cute looking for Cha in the snow. Shouldn't she be bigger than this by now? It's been like six months and kittens grow big during this phase.
Takoro brought a present for Hikari. That's brave.
Teko is fast. Don't mess with Onee-san, Takoro.
Kokoro called Futaba the enemy. Hau! So mean!
Hikari has a tako mug. She also wants cake.
Kokoro won't fall for the enemy's tricks! Eehhh!
That's not a snowman. That a snow octopus!
Well, Hikari wanted cake, so now she gets four birthday cakes.
I didn't know the Kohinata girls had a big brother. He must be in college.
Guys have green hair, girls have blonde hair, but Hikari's hair looks like a mix of both colors.
Har. Kokoro's birthday is on Doll's Day, pretty much the girliest day in all of Japan.
I like this assertive Futaba. She's totally making Kokoro go with her pace.
Kokoro doesn't want her and Hikari to come to the hillside burn-off. Futaba is totally going to come and see him.
Kotori and Kodama. Kotori has an octopus backpack too. We're at 90% confirmation she is Kokoro's big sister.
Big sis Futaba is also confident in talking to Kotori. They did share a dream about Winter blossoms.
And then... Futaba sees Kokoro in a boy's school uniform! He's a boy! Was there every any doubt? Yes, actually there was a little. But no, Kokoro is not a girl wanting to be macho.
Ha! We haven't seen Hikari's whistle all season. Yes, Kotori, she is a weirdo.
Kokoro is entering 7th grade, so he's three years younger than Hikari and Futaba. Boys be ambitious, or something.
Big sis Futaba is rooting for him! Big blush! Did she say something bad? Yes!
Oh ho. Kokoro is so manly, protecting Hikari from fire.
Hahaha! Futaba saw all this boy-girl confusion coming. Ai was the most shocked of all.
Makoto says he always knew Kokoro was a boy. What was the big deal?
Next time, Futaba gets her Advance Diving license. Hey, is that what the title is all about? Mind blown... not really. I saw that coming too!
