Episode 20 - "Erina's Diligent Studies"

Hmm.

Doujima improvises like jazz while Saiba creates free form modern art. This is what we learned about the creative styles of Gin and Jouichirou, the former first and second seats of the Elite 10 Council. It explains how we saw a smooth transition from the usual form of the hachis Parmentier dish to what Team Doujima made compared to the surreal form Team Saiba made from a clash of creative input. One side is collaborative during the cooking, while the other side can only realize the collaborative efforts in the final presentation.

The important thread here is that both Doujima and Saiba define true gourmet by taking the recipe as the starting point, like a jazz standard or a blank canvas intended to capture a creative moment, and then add their unique style and preferences to it. The beauty of team cooking is that the gourmet dish doesn't even have to rely on a singular vision, but something unexpected, yet still retaining the Idea of a dish, can be created by a group. The restaurant kids already knew this, so they either needed to follow the chef's lead or butt heads like usual.

As was made explicit later, this exercise was a lesson for Erina to take on the true spirit of the Rebels and their idea of gourmet - creative collaboration. Azami's conception of rigid gourmet, where no modifications to recipes would be allowed, is anathema to that spirit. The test was how to make the God Tongue, trained to have perfect pitch (to use a musical metaphor), accommodate creative flair. Erina just started down this new path of using her God Tongue as a recognition tool instead of a conformity tool.

Heh.

Oh man. I just love seeing Souma's derp face.

Momo is a big pout.

Eizan holds a grudge. He only wants to beat Souma.

Har. Everyone knows Eizan has lost twice to Souma and they're not too confident that he has the skills to actually beat him. Rindou thinks she's helping, but she's actually being condescending. That stings even more!

Nene panty flash! I think we're supposed to notice her graceful dancer moves.

Since nobody is supposed to be talking during this cooking match, it's up to the train staff to offer the running commentary.

Or, people could just have full on conversations by just looking at each other...

I think Takumi's stagiaire story was the subject of an OAD provided with the manga and never broadcast. He went through a hair cutting phase too, just like a moody teenage girl.

The Yukihiras cook through clashing, arguing, and insisting, not harmony like Doujima's crew. We've seen this before, but can Erina join their flow?

Oh ho. Senzaemon is a clever teacher. The other side will taste test the other's dish.

Foodgasms all around. Even the train staff!

Everybody wins! Erina said "jazz band" in English. Takumi calls Team Saiba modern artists like Jackson Pollack.

Senzaemon says the point of the exercise was to make sure this team knows each of the members' abilities. They figured it out alright.

Enough cooking. Time for drama. Rindou hates the cold.

Eizan can only say "crush you!" over and over. Ha, this is so funny.

Momo and Saitou appear to have a sibling relationship. Only he can bully her Bucchi! She doesn't like it, but she's allowing it.

Erina takes a deep breath. Then she takes some more... don't hyperventilate!

She's a true rebel now. She threw away her Elite 10 Council rank so she doesn't have to follow orders.
