10 Second Anime - Dagashi Kashi S2 - Episode 5

Three months after Hotaru left, the Shikada Snack Store faces a crisis. Kokonotsu feels a new resolve, but he faces a new problem.

Episode 5 - "Ambulance, Get a Move On, You Cod!, and..."

Hmm.

This is the first time this season that an episode felt too short. Which is amazing, considering that the anime adaptation moved to a half episode format. It just goes to show that when you have actual plot development going on, instead of set gag pieces, the rhythm of the acts seems to call for half an hour. Granted, we had a replay of the flash forward from the first episode and a song insert montage, but there was stuff happening. A double dose of drama with a cliffhanger makes this show feel like it's moving again.

Another thing I'm worried about is Hotaru's judgment. The whole premise of the show is that she wants You working for her corporation because of how the Shikada Snack Store was set up. It's clear from his three months of depression that Kokonotsu was the one keeping the shop maintained, not You. Because, Goddamn. 9-Piece takes his mind off the store for three months and look what his father did to it! I can understand not cleaning it and not stocking it, because he's lazy, but there was actual damage to the store, as if another typhoon came through and You didn't even bother repairing anything.

Maybe Hotaru just assumed You was responsible for how well the store was run, but she needs to get Kokonotsu working for her company! The best way is having him marry into the family, of course...

Heh.

Hotaru is gone. Kokonotsu is depressed. You has let the store turn into a shambles. We need a turning point. But what?

And so.

Let's talk about this episode! Somehow it's just not the same without Hotaru saying "de, de!"

I have a policy of not making images of flash forwards in the anime I cover because, first of all, anime producers are lazy, so I know we're going to see that same footage again when the story actually starts covering those events, and second, I like to make images of scenes relevant to the current story. Well, now Saya looking like she's about to confess her love to Kokonotsu is relevant to the story!

Nice time skip. Three months after Hotaru left and what the hell happened to the shop? I can understand Kokonotsu being depressed and not working it, but what about the adult who was always supposed to actually work there? My estimation of You has fallen even further.

Okay, Kokonotsu is sounding like every other forgettable beta-kun MC as he shouts about nonsense that no one else knows about. How is his father supposed to know that he needs to keep the store open so Kokonotsu can keep his promise to redeem Hotaru's ice cream bar coupon? Shut up already.

Oh. You figured it out. He's been sneaking peeks at Kokonotsu like a responsible father should. Uh, wait.

Oh, so now that Kokonotsu is invested again in keeping the shop open, now You wants to clean it up. What a con man. First chance he gets, he 's going to make his son take care of it all.

First chance? How about no chance? He broke his toe before they even started!

Well, getting You out of the way may let Kokonotsu actually run the store the way it's supposed to be run.

Aw. Saya and Tou still want to cheer Kokonotsu up. Just don't mention Hotaru! But, he's already better?

Saya told Tou not to mention Hotaru!

Um, where's the money coming from to restock the shelves? I thought they were just about to close the business. And also, how did all these shelves get broken anyway? This isn't just three months of neglect!

Hey, that idol magazine cover looks like it crossed Saya with Hotaru. Like, the body and hair of Saya, but with Hotaru's eyes and hair color.

Ha. Now Kokonotsu is doing the snacksplaining like he used to do sometimes in the first season. Really, that snack name sounds exactly like how Saya and Tou talk. Like "yankee" delinquents.

Aw again. Saya is so happy to get compliments and thanks from Kokonotsu.

Hahaha! Too much "janeyo" between siblings here!

Oh snap. Kokonotsu had an idea to make the snack store a little bit more like a convenience store since their little town doesn't have one. He should have thought of that at least three months earlier...

Finally. We'll get to meet one of the two new characters we've been seeing for half a season already in the opening and closing credits. If this were a half hour show, we would have had the extra drama and crisis start in the third episode. I'm just miffed because it means we'll get even less time to ogle the mousy glasses-wearing lady who can barely hide those barking sweater puppies. Uh, did I type that last part out loud?
