10 Second Anime - Shokugeki no Soma S3 - Episode 6

Erina's father moves forward quickly with his plan for Toutsuki. Erina's friends and family seek to protect her from his domineering ways.

Episode 6 - "The Imprisoned Queen"

Hmm.

There are two things that I appreciated greatly in this episode. First, we have glorious Erina fan service. My friends, it's been a very long time since we've seen Erina a slightly more vulnerable position when it comes to her skin outside of the OVA disks released with the manga volumes. Not since the first season! It was over too quickly, but I'm still grateful.

Second, I liked the explanation of Erina's God Tongue. It's clear she always had the gifted taste buds, but the disturbing brainwashing techniques of her father Azami are what honed it into a kind of perfect pitch for gourmet food. He conditioned her into having a disgust reflex when the subtle flavors were just slightly off. 10 years later, she still flashes that reaction.

It also adds another layer to her reaction to the first dish Souma made for her. It was like nothing that was supposed to be put together, and it tasted great, but it was against her perfect pitch, so she still pronounced it "disgusting." At the time, which was like the 2nd episode in the anime adaptation, the audience would have just attributed it to her tsundere personality. Now we have a deeper feeling to that scene, with a greater appreciation to how Souma's presence is a good thing for her.

Heh.

Gin ran into Jouichiro, Souma's dad! Still no explanation for why his name Saiba wasn't passed on to Souma.

Whoa. Quite the quick montage of their past exploits as the 1st and 2nd Seats of the Elite 10 Council, which we saw previously. Ah, Azami was there too as the 3rd Seat.

Ibusaki, Prince of Smoke (ahem), noticed that Isshiki wasn't included in the coup plot.

Azami made sure to stress Toutsuki's role in driving Japanese food culture. That's what we call a "tell."

How rude. Still having those Sendawara Twins there, but not showing any foodgasms.

Azami dismissed Hisako! That can't be good. We saw from last episode that Hisako was there to be Erina's companion as a child after Azami's "banishment."

Oh. Hello there, buff Grandpa Nakiri! And he makes Souma run with him.

I notice Alice has red eyes like her Grandpa.

Well, we can see why Grandpa banished Azami. Even going so far as to throw her cousin's letters away.

Erina was a good girl. You're not supposed to waste food! This Azami guy is a demon.

Grandpa Nakiri talks of a group of people helping Erina out of her shell. We see Hisako, Alices' parents, Saiba, someone else who might be Hisako's dad.

Grandpa asked Souma to help Erina, but Alice and crew already broke her out! But they didn't think far enough ahead to have a place to stash her. She's not a stray cat!

You better not look up, Ryou!

Megumi's like an angel, leading them to sanctuary.

Ah yes! Glorious Erina fan service!

The Polar Star Dorm kids were also affected by Erina's story! Hisako knows how to jerk those tears. But they also want to take advantage of the God Tongue while she's there. Fire up those spirits as they fire up their pots and pans.

Erina recognized Saiba in Souma's apron twirl. This is a good romance development. Tying her frustrated feelings to an old related crush. Lots of furious blushing ahead.

Ha! Erina still wants to play cards so badly.

The French Gourmet teacher sees fascism and tyranny in Azami's plans. Nice cliffhanger.
