Episode 5 - "Magia Erebea"
Hmm.
Not surprisingly, Touta and Karin take care of the immortal hunting mercenaries using their different kinds of immortality. As expected, Touta isn't just a vampire and the blind mercenary recognized his power as Magia Erebea. This is Latin for Dark Magic, but literally the Magic of Erebus, one of the primordial gods first born from Chaos. In Japanese, this was always written as 闇の魔法 (yami no mahou - the Magic of Darkness), and it was always a great contrast to the goodness and light of Negi Springfield that he would use such a risky dark power as his ultimate power up.
In the original Negima!, the Evangeline's technique was powered by negative emotions and would consume the soul of the user so that, eventually, the user would become a mindless magical being bent on destruction. It took Evangeline a long time to develop it and Negi perfected it. Here, we see Touta using it unconsciously and also gaining control of it rather quickly.
Kaito believed that the Magia Erebea was the actual source of Touta's immortality, which explained why he stopped regenerating when he brought it back into his body. Evangeline told Touta that he got this power because she made him into a vampire, so the power was passed on that way, but Kuromaru shot a look of skepticism at that. As viewers who know Negima! lore, we also know that is a lie by omission and that Eva is leaving quite a bit out of how Touta has this power without any training.
This is all good, because it keeps tying Touta to Negi and the larger story of what happened to him and how Mars is involved. This is the stuff I wanted to see from UQ Holder! and seeing an adult version of someone looking like Fate Averruncus has me looking forward to more.
Heh.
Kaito continues to wail on Kuromaru so his damage outpaces the regeneration. He also calls Kuromaru "little lady." Did he figure something out after kicking "him" in half?
Oh no. Touta's little disciple found some courage.
While we let incipient child killing simmer in the back of our minds, let's look at some more deviant torture with Chao and Karin.
I don't know what year it is now, but it's 80 years since Negima! and that was quite a while after 1942! The Steel Saint is an old lady!
Chao likes Karin's kind of immortality. She shows no damage, but still feels all the pain. Perfect for his sick torture.
Okay, now that we have Karin about to get a different kind of setback, it's okay to go back to child killing while we let incipient sexual assault simmer in the back of our minds. But cartoons are for kids...
Of course. Touta isn't some simple vampire. Those glowing black gloves are some kind of different power.
Ah. Karin had enough of this crap. It's time to start her version of the nut cracker. Karin kicks hard!
Karin tells Chao that she was not cursed by God. She was Loved by Him. That sign on her back says XIII, 13. As in the thirteenth apostle? She was only holding back because she feels unworthy to use God's Blessing. Come on, now. From what I can see, she's very "blessed" and very "worthy."
Ha! Touta Big Bro is so cool!
He's got time to tell Kuromaru dick jokes too!
Oh well, sure. Kaito isn't a bad guy. He just wants to be a mercenary so he can meet weird people like Touta to fight.
Aw. Karin is wearing clothes again. Apparently her uniform didn't get damaged in the all the destruction at the shower stalls. Is Chao dead, though? He didn't leave with the blind dude and werewolf at the end of the episode.
After all that fighting with Magia Erebea, it all comes down to arm wrestling again. Well, Kaito did say his flash step training would help, so let's go see it.
Touta's flash step is superior because he says he needs to love the world, not just win it. That's some good shounen stuff right there.
As expected, Kuromaru did call the cavalry with that firework display. Eva made quick work of that fire with her ice magic.
Har. Because the slums are covered in ice, the nuns give out shrine snacks and warm drinks like on New Year's. This show is so Japanese.
Well, that white hair guy looks familiar. He was in Eva and Negi's Martian group from 25 years ago and he looks like a grown up Fate Averruncus. Did he hire those mercs just to draw Yukihime and Touta out for surveillance?
Next time, Kuromaru gets his own story.
More Evangeline in the end card. When do we get some Karin or more Yukihime?
