Episode 5 - "Secret in the First Bite"
Heh.
Souma is so brash, he told Mimasaka exactly what he was going to cook!
Of course, it was a tactical decision to see who could come up with better twists on the base recipe.
This junior high newspaper reporter was supposed to be the exposition device, but Souma had the right response to his aspirations considering the younger dude is attending a cooking school. He should be cooking!
I liked Souma's tip about using spices that are big leaves that can be tied together so they can easily be removed when the sauce is done.
That kid ended up being useless, which was a good excuse to go find the God Tongue.
Erina has her own problems this week. Hisako went on the Japanese cliché journey to deal with her failure in the Autumn Elections. Erina had no one to bring her the next volume of the shoujo manga she was reading. Obviously, Erina was in the worse position...
No, it's true. Without Hisako as another layer of security, any old riffraff could knock on her front door. Like Souma carrying a pot of stew.
The theme of Souma's contest is Western Cuisine. Stew fits the bill nicely, but he's been cooking it the way a Japanese diner would cook it. Erina gave him some good advice about not understanding the match's topic.
The God Tongue doesn't come cheap, but she will readily accept the next volume of shoujo manga that Souma saw in his dorm. I wonder who's been reading the same things.
Oh hey! Scenes from the Summer OVA that I haven't seen yet. Grr.
Mimasaka used his time well to become a creepier bigger version of Souma. Well, at least we had some kind of sexy foodgasm.
Today was a white day for Ikumi... Her crush on Souma is still one of the funniest gags in the show.
I was right about the new crop of judges letting us have some awesome foodgasms. Not this episode yet.
Doujima the resort owner is playing the Grandpa Nakiri role, right down to baring his chest and recycling some animation scenes. We've seen two of the judges before from last season. Hinako is always funny, but she won't have the glasses guy to make fun of.
The foreshadowing about what twists Souma and Mimasaka are going to add to the original recipe center around how diner fare focuses on the third bite to get customers coming back for repeat business. Haute cuisine and cooking matches rely on the first bite impact, so the mellow stew that Souma maneuvered Mimasaka to cook is going to need some changes.
Mimasaka played his hand first in the cliffhanger, but Souma should try to make him serve his dish first. We'll see if that becomes part of his adjustments to win the match.
