This year's Grand Depart at Mont-Saint-Michel marks its third appearance as a stage town. It has only 42 year-round inhabitants. The church was consecrated in 709 and a community of Benedictines settled there in 966. The site lost its religious nature during the French Revolution but was recently resettled by a religious community in 1966. As a UNESCO World Heritage site, Mont-Saint-Michel sees 2.5 million visitors a year.
