10 Second Anime - Naruto Shippuuden - Episode 459

Naruto and Sasuke face off against Kaguya, the source of all ninja chakra.

Episode 459 - "She of the Beginning"

Heh.

Hey, new opening credits. Probably the last opening sequence ever for the Naruto animated show.

Unfortunately, it looks like they're going to milk this opening for the rest of this season and all of the Summer season judging by the Kaguya filler starting next week.

The fight between the awakened Kaguya and Naruto and Sasuke was pretty straightforward, with Kaguya recognizing their hand marks as belonging to Indra and Ashura.

The whole chakra system in Naruto has always been very Vedic, with the ninja clans being based on Japanese folklore. It's interesting that Kaguya, the source of chakra, had grandchildren from Hagoromo named Indra and Ashura. Where Hagoromo and his brother Hamura were never rivals, the children were the first to establish this karmic opposition that continued through Hashirama and Madara and then ultimately to Naruto and Sasuke.

Kaguya's last name, Ootsutsuki (大筒木), means large bore tree. How about that?

We did learn from the Black Zetsu that he was "born" of Kaguya as she was defeated by her children. He subtly influenced the ninja world, those who wielded Kaguya's chakra, to unite and bring about her revival. Looks like he did it, but the outcome is balanced on a razor's edge since the reincarnations of Indra and Ashura bearing the power to seal away the body of the 10-Tail are working together. Can't have an epic tale without two great things happening to oppose each other, right?

There was an interesting moment showing Sasuke's ruthless rational side in thinking that he had to sacrifice the non-combatants to make sure they defeat this Ninja Goddess. Naruto, of course, opts for the path that will save everyone and reminded Sasuke that he has that impulse too. This is a great reference for the eternal argument between the two philosophies embodied by Indra and Ashura about how and why to use chakra.

Next time, Kaguya filler. This stuff was never shown in the manga, so in one sense, this is good filler. But in the other sense, in which we only got one and a half episodes of the main story between filler arcs, this is also bad filler. I was hoping this season would be the last before the new age of Boruto, Naruto's son, since his manga debuted this week, but it looks like they're going to drag the story out for the Summer season. I'm starting to feel like I did during the last season of Smallville. Just let Clark put on the suit and fly already!
