10 Second Anime - Flying Witch - Episode 3

Makoto clears a field and chases a pheasant. Another mysterious person visits Makoto.

Episode 3 - "Lessons in Farming and Magic"

Heh.

That one cat hanging out with the dark-skinned silver-haired girl in the opening credits is apparently named Kenny and also hangs out with camels.

Ha! Makoto needs a translator to understand Kei and Chinatsu's father.

We've seen how Makoto pulls plants out of the ground before.

Much less screaming and creepy root wriggling this time around.

I like how Makoto had to rub her butt every single time she fell on it.

And then, Slice of Life happened!

A colorful pheasant showed up to taunt Makoto and make her want to catch it. Why? She just wanted to catch it!

Chito too!

This is where a setting and characters just make things happen, which is the hallmark of Healing Anime. This rural part of Japan is home to pheasants and they appear to run slow enough to catch, but you just never can.

Chito chasing the pheasant gave us a chance at humor with Makoto's lack of self-awareness about how she wouldn't give up on catching the pheasant either.

The kicker to the whole scene was when Mr. Kuramoto came out back to see how the vegetable patch was coming along and then he went off chasing that pheasant too! One of the usual themes of healing anime is people seemingly not understanding each other or being very different, but then discovering how similar they are. All it took was a taunting pheasant to provide the hook.

Mundane Magic

We haven't seen Makoto use magic since the first episode and the audience isn't alone in getting a little cranky about that.

In this world, magic is no big deal. It's not flashy, but it still has symbols and runes and incantations. Makoto's big sister, Akane, wants to pay a visit to her, but she's in the middle of some African desert with a camel. No big deal. Just poof!

I think Chinatsu is getting used to weird people showing up asking about Makoto. It was pretty fitting to have Akane appear while she was watering the flower pot from the Harbinger of Spring.

Makoto seems to have a complex about using magic. Maybe it's because of how big a deal her sister is. She's a very big deal!

She's also terrible at picking out gifts. Actual rock salt. Like, just a rock!

Akane admonished Makoto about not using magic because if she doesn't use it often, she will lose her power. It's like keeping physically fit. She's got to flex her magic muscles.

Ah. Summoning ravens. That's a very witchy thing to do. Just burn some black hair with a talisman.

Oh, but don't use a witch's hair to do it.

I guess Akane forgot about that part because she doesn't have long black hair, so she can't use this spell on her own.

In the opening credits we see Makoto blowing stuff up in a cauldron. This is the first scene that satisfies the hint of her magical clumsiness. Although it wasn't her fault Akane forgot about not using witch hair.

Ooh. That's a lot of ravens!

And then, just like that, Akane poofed back to waiting camel in Africa. Simple powerful magic.

I want to see Makoto do some of that mundane magic. Hopefully she doesn't scare Chito too much with all the explosions.
