Izuko explains the importance of Polar Snake's Shrine. Araragi encounters a surprise on his shopping errand.
"Shinobu Mail"
Hmm.
Well, Izuko explained what all the swirly clouds meant. It's the location of an "air spot," a naturally occurring phenomenon where supernatural entities are drawn together. Having a well-maintained shrine to a respected god at this location prevents "accidents" from happening. Like all the "accidents" which have become the aberrations we've seen during the whole Bakemonogatari series.
Izuko's explanations also show why she wanted Shinobu to be the "god" of this shrine, but then her plans were disrupted by Ougi when she manipulated Nadeko into becoming the Snake God. Perhaps Ougi didn't want to have a repeat performance of the vampire Heart-under-Blade posing as a fake god from 400 years ago.
As for the revived Samurai, his returning to the air spot 15 years ago accelerated his ash cloud coalescing. However, his return also ruined the shrine maintaining the air spot and he began "eating" all the things that normally gathered to the air spot. When the events of the Bakemonogatari first begin happening, Meme Oshino had sealed the powers gathering there, cutting off the samurai's "food." Seeing Shinobu with Araragi right before their time travel trip exacerbated the ash cloud's desperation and what it's been doing up until his appearance the night before is still a mystery. Izuko's main concern is that she wants to stop the samurai before it "eats" a real live person.
The surprise ending where a slight long-haired boy meets Araragi and claims to be this samurai is where we have our cliffhanger. Is he still related to the nameless darkness? Izuko's focus on the samurai seems to imply they're not related except as the cause of his death 400 years ago, but what has been going on recently? We'll have to wait for the first minion's side of things to find out more.
Heh.
Shinobu may be a small looking vampire now, but she still has her imperious attitude.
These two in the modern era would make a very scary monster movie!
Shinobu worried that stealing the shrine's gathered power to time travel somehow released the samurai.
It's all good, though. It only "released" him, in a sense, through some kind of jealous vengeful fit. He wasn't sealed up with all the gathered apparitions.
Shinobu really doesn't want to see that guy again. This is turning into a bad ex-boyfriend plot!
Shinobu only has eyes for one guy right now.
Aren't you lucky, Araragi?
Yotsugi was supposed to clean up the ash cloud and other things, but Shinobu's little sojourn into the past didn't leave her much to do.
Of course, the samurai has his own agenda and timeline. Like Izuko said last week, knowing everything is different than being able to do something about it.
Will we find out his name? Shinobu is terrible with names, so we never got it from her what her first minion's name was.
With so much information to be dished out, we didn't even have time for opening credits. But, after all the talking was done, we had plenty of time for funny stuff.
Araragi wasn't sure he could leave Shinobu with Suruga, but he didn't have much choice.
It's breakfast time, but Suruga doesn't want just food. She wants to buy the latest Boys Love Light Novel that just came out.
A full-on fujoshi! Didn't see that coming...
Araragi didn't want to hear about the decadent slide of the light novel genre.
But Suruga's requests weren't over. On top of making a heterosexual male teenager buy erotic homosexual reading material, she went all the way to the other side of the spectrum.
Making a heterosexual male teenager buy her a bra! She wants her bosom to be cherished... Well, she had left the house not wearing any underwear because she was certain Araragi had called her out for a sexual tryst. Eh, not so much.
Ahahaha! I had to laugh at the cover of this book!
Why does the vampire look like Kaiki? And is the blond guy supposed to be Meme Oshino the Hawaiian shirt boy?
Being Koyomi Araragi is suffering... But he'll buy that book for Suruga, as long as he buys other stuff so as not to lose all hetero street cred.
Why yes, Araragi, you have been making people think you're a lolicon with all the time you've spent with those younger girls. Time to throw us off the scent with some mature ladies porn. And they all look like Izuko... This show kills me!
Next time - the androgynous looking samurai drops Araragi some knowledge.
