10 Second Anime - Owarimonogatari - Episode 7

Araragi asks Suruga to meet someone else, but they are interrupted by "something" wearing samurai armor.

"Shinobu Mail"

Hmm.

It's here! Finally! Seeing the origin of the nameless darkness! If you want to get caught up quickly about this thing's relationship with Shinobu, read this first. This sequence of events happens concurrently during Hanekawa's black cat story. At the end of that story, Araragi and Shinobu arrive just in time to vanquish the Tiger with her sword, the very one this samurai suit is looking for.

There are pros and cons for telling these connected stories out of temporal sequence. The pros are obviously heightening tension and letting those who pay attention have all those little "aha!" moments. The cons come in the anime adaptations where it looks like the characters have never seen these things before because they have to act as expositional devices for the viewers. Araragi should have recognized the weird scrabbly black lines animating the armor suit as the big black ball that came after Mayoi. However, since we've been dealing more and more with Ougi, Araragi's memory lapses are becoming a feature of her presence in the story. Her statement that "she doesn't know anything; it's what Araragi knows," is a big clue to her relationship with Araragi and the nameless darkness.

What I appreciated about this introduction of the nameless darkness was how it needed to grow in power and that it was explicitly shown to be related to the Aberration Hunter it killed 400 hundred years ago when it went after Shinobu, then known as Kiss-shot etc. Ougi's origami prologue emphasized that as well.

Heh.

I'm hoping during the telling of this story we'll learn how Araragi and Shinobu's connection got severed. Two years ago, we saw her and Araragi jump into past, which may explain all those weird memory problems starting to happen, but then the next story jumped to when they were already reunited.

We definitely need more donut eating little vampire girls this season.

Suruga is the character Araragi needs in his life to remind him that he shouldn't sexually tease all the younger girls so much.

She's too much even for Araragi!

What a coincidence. A stray reference to Nurse Witch Komugi-chan when a revival is coming next season.

The hero of the episode, besides the Tiger who drove away the samurai for Hanekawa's sake, even if it would never admit it, was Yotsugi.

She made a reference to putting out a fire with a concussive blast two years ago when this black blob started chasing Mayoi, and now we know what she was talking about. She might have recognized the samurai as the blob too, but she came to Suruga and Araragi's rescue after it had already left, so we're still left with the faulty memory of Araragi as an issue during Mayoi's sequence.

It appears Yotsugi has not learned "Yay, yay, peace, peace," yet. Perhaps we'll see that happen in the next few episodes too!

I'm getting excited about this show again. We've got pure, unadulterated magic shit hitting the fan instead of all the muted expectation of magic during the Sodachi arc. With Suruga involved, we're already getting way more action and violence than the slap fight Senjougahara and Sodachi had in the classroom. Also, way more sexual humor and harassment is coming our way. I can't wait!
