The girls battle a spider, make pancakes and waste time while an older sister tries to avoid social suicide.
Episode 2 - "Tremble in Fear"
Heh.
Anytime that sane straight man Yui is shown in a vulnerable way is a good time for comedy. Like being afraid of spiders and not wanting to ask Kyoko for help because she didn't want to be made fun of.
Spiders aren't clouds! Well, in Japanese, they're homonyms, both pronounced くも (kumo). I'd rather have seen Akari riding a cloud instead of a big spider...
After Chinatsu showed up and tried to impress Yui, it turned out as expected. And Yui still needed to call Kyoko over to get rid of the spider.
Kyoko's talent for disposing of spiders fit in well with her decorative pancake making. They're both skills that have their place, but are much further down the list of priorities like doing homework or house chores.
The other pairings had their chance to get their yuri vibes on concentrating on the differences between Sakurako the pettanko and Himawari the busty serious student. Ayano also got a bit closer to Kyoko in a random meetup. But none of those opportunities to show growing affection compared to the sheer output of Akari's older sister Akane..
Akane's obsession over her little sister could easily lead to the bad yuri, but she is aware of the social stigma and tries not to let Akari know the depths of her depravity. Of course, trying to keep her "hobby" a secret lends itself to comedy fodder.
Like forgetting she left her Akari hug pillow case drying on the clothesline. Her mad dash home, especially her trick with the pass card at the train station, was the action highlight of the episode.
Busted! Or not. Akari just wasn't ready to share her homemade cookies with her beloved older sister yet.
One thing I love about these characters is how intertwined all their lives are. Akane's college buddy is Chinatsu's older sister. One of the neighborhood kids playing at the park in the background during Kyoko and Ayano's scene was Himawari's little sister. And Ayano's frilly outfit came from Kyoko herself because their mothers are close friends. I think it makes it easier for the cute girls to do cute things together, while their siblings and family members can be sources of embarrassing anecdotes.
Eh, Kyoko likes masochistic cider? Nice call back to last week.
