10 Second Anime - YuruYuri S3 - Episode 1

Translated: Lazy Lilies. The third season of the anime adapted from the manga starring four high school girls who take over the empty Tea Club's house and form the Amusement Club. The girls and their friends play the King Game, waste time during cooking class and Akari meets a relatively mature young girl. Season Premiere.

Episode 1 - "That Is, Namely, the Beginning of Amusement"

First Thoughts.

It's been a while since last we saw sweet but unfortunate Akari and her friends. The first episode did a good job of reintroducing the characters in the first vignette of this character driven gag comedy. Without knowing the little personality traits of each of the pairs, most of the humor would fall flat, so having a free-for-all King Game where all sorts competitiveness and drama can come out was a nice device to kick off the season.

As an aside, the title is a play on 緩緩 (ゆるゆる - yuruyuru) which means slow paced or leisurely and yuri (literally 百合 (ゆり - lily) which is the Japanese take on lesbianism in manga and anime. The yuri here is played for laughs with a nod toward a receptive and knowing audience. It's important to note that each of the girls are paired up as an established unit, but that doesn't stop feelings of "admiration" and "discomfort" among the other girls, adding to the font of humor.

After the first of three mini episodes, I was comfortable again within the world of the Amusement Club, following clumsy Akari, scheming Chinatsu, straight man Yui and irrepressible Kyouko. It's the beginning, you know!

Heh.

Lazy lilies? Oh, when it's hot, you bet.

If Kyouko doesn't get up to get her own manga volumes, she'll turn into a cow. "Moo," she replied.

Chinatsu still looks so pure and exactly like magical girl Mirakurun. She didn't make any dark disturbing drawings this time around, but she showed us her devious side.

Still obsessing over Yui, especially freaked out over the possibility of her kissing someone else.

Yui was still the sane one in the bunch.

Chinatsu saw a chance to make Yui do her bidding.

When a whole bunch of the other girls showed up to join the King Game, she suddenly lost interest.

Yui still had utter domination over Kyouko's antics.

Kyouko, Rest In Peace. Actually, dizzy girls needed to make room for the other girls around the table.

Kyouko had no idea that one could do chores while they waited for food to cook. What an alien concept!

Poor Akari. Such a sweet soul, yet so beset by calamity.

Japan is so adventurous with their flavors of "juice" (their catchall term for any sweet beverage), but what the heck is "masochistic cider?" What would that even taste like? And why does it look like A&W Root Beer?

I was waiting all episode for Akari's signature shock move with her hair balls jumping off her head, and then it happened! Mission Complete!

Yuru Yuri is all the way back and I'll be looking forward each week for the comedic adventures of the Amusement Club.
