The outward signs of growing up weigh on the girls' minds, with some less receptive than others.
Episode 11 - "I Became a Pampered Child"
Heh.
I like how consistent our characters are, especially Komari. She's almost the smallest one of the four main girls, yet she's the oldest, so markers of adulthood are a feature for her. Contrast her with Hotaru, the tallest one even though she's the second youngest. She's polite and reserved in public, supposedly signs of maturity, but then when she's at home she acts very much like the 5th grader she's supposed to be.
We saw hints of Hotaru's childishness when she got so excited talking about cartoons with Natsumi earlier in the season.
Komari wants to grow up fast, but she better not, otherwise where will all the short jokes come from?
Coming from "the sticks" means only hearing about "dot com" instead actually living with the internet.
Poor Hotaru. She still wants to be treated like a kid, so she couldn't tell Komari that she had her own cell phone in Tokyo or McDonald's breakfast. She still wants to be treated like a kid, doesn't want to make her senpai feel bad for "being ahead" of her and also doesn't want Komari to feel bad about the differences between city life and the country. That last part is Hikage's role.
Even cell phone reception has to make short jokes about Komari.
Konomi is still an S-Class troll.
It's winter break before New Year's and yet there's no snow on the ground. I guess we still have a little time before the snow house episode from the first season.
Hikage knows Renge is some kind of accidental genius considering the art she's made before on her New Year postcards, so she was prepared to do anything to see what Renge was going to draw.
Well, anything within the realm of human possibility at least.
Renge's disappointed face is adorable, but it's a bit scary how quickly she could change to her rage face.
Ah. So that's a Sosunser. Someone who uses sosuns, which was apparently poking the breast bone very quickly.
Hikage tried to show that her use of email was what marked her as more mature than Renge, who still relied on paper cards to wish her friends a Happy New Year. But then Hikage picked a fight with a six year old over peeking at her drawings, so she's obviously not as grown up as she thought she was. Plus, she lost the fight to a six year old...
Accidental genius, right? Drawing a monkey which incorporated a sheep to show the Year of the Ram moving to the Year of the Monkey.
Hotaru may act childish at home, but her kind of childishness belongs to a very well behaved child. Foregoing snacks to leave room for her favorite dish and deciding to do homework over a school break while dinner is cooking sounds pretty mature to me. But then she decided to cuddle with her dog while watching a cat special, so, okay, still childish.
Plus, she did that blanket roll thing.
Nekomari did turn out well.
Hotaru was being truthful about not being mature, but she's still a very good girl.
Hmm.
The overall theme of looking grown up versus being grown up is always a good one and is pretty ripe for material with the different ages of our four main girls. The best part of this episode was the other girls finally seeing Hotaru's immature side. It tied in the themes of stepping through the gateways to adulthood with how they were all becoming close friends if Hotaru was able to show a side that only her family had seen. It drove home the point that all of them are growing up together, but they don't really have to rush it either.
