Tony Martin, the German time trial specialist, as been 2nd place in the standings since the first stage. His gap has been decreasing with each stage, from 5 seconds, to 3 and then to 1 second yesterday. On a tough stage which included 7 of the cobbled sectors from Paris-Roubaix, Martin broke away with 5 km to go and held on for the win. The victory marks his first career yellow jersey, and he did it on a teammate's borrowed bike. The only other rider who could have broken away solo was former yellow jersey holder Fabian Cancellara, but he didn't start the stage after being diagnosed with two broken vertebrae after yesterday's horrendous crash.
