While the yellow jersey competition calms down after they mountainous Pyrenees stages, the green jersey contest remains very exciting. At least it was, before the end of Stage 13 when Peter Sagan finished second to Greg Van Avermaet to extend his lead over Andre Greipel to 24 points. Yesterday and in the middle of today's stage, a handful of points separated the two, with Greipel actually leading by 1 point before the finale.
It was yesterday at the intermediate sprint point that Greipel really wanted a good result because it was his 33rd birthday. "Sagan was not in a gift-giving mood" for other reasons though.
While Sagan may have put a damper on Greipel's celebrations, today is incidentally his girlfriend's birthday.
"Today is the 16th, also my girlfriend has a birthday, so it's good for me," Sagan said.
