Besides the dramatic crash right before the finish line on Stage 6 which sent yellow jersey holder Tony Martin home with a compound fracture to his collar bone, there was a less dramatic crash, but perhaps more spectacular, many kilometers beforehand.
Damiano Caruso, a BMC rider, was bringing water bottles back up to the front of the peloton when he did not see what a rider in front of him barely avoided - a hay bale covering a signpost on a raised curb. Luckily for Caruso, the water bottles in the back of his jersey shielded his fall and he was the only rider involved in the crash.
