Hayato's reluctance to announce his studies track exposes Yumiko's hurt feelings.
Heh.
Rumors had always flown around who Hayato was or wasn't dating, so I'm not sure why the recent one pairing him with Yukino captured the school's imagination when he was hanging out with Haruno, Hachiman and Yui too. Seems like a convenient plot development to me.
This episode was like a throwback to the first season when Hachiman pulled some sneaky athletic tricks to make a point. Here, he finally took advantage of Saika's offers to help by asking him to use the tennis team to create a gap for him and Hayato.
Yukino wasted no time in using her birthday presents.
The opening credits had Iroha show up again. And Hachiman's cup is there at their little tea station.
Hayato said several times that he doesn't want to lose to Hachiman, but I don't think he was talking about that marathon.
He also said at the end that not making choices is the best way of doing things. That might work for a younger person, but eventually you'll just find yourself in the circumstances life dealt you. Perhaps his reference to a choice that's not really a choice makes his statement merely a reaction to something he doesn't like.
Iroha demonstrates to Yui and Yukino how to ask a guy out without asking him out.

Those two girls need to take some notes.
Haruno has loads of natural talent in making guys swoon.
Iroha knows she's lost Hachiman to Yui and Yukino, but it doesn't mean she still can't have her fun with him.
Those other girls may get a reaction out of Hachiman, but there's only one that can make time stand still.
Both Hachiman and Hayato said they hated the other, but it sounded more like a declaration of respect. They've become rivals, but for what or for whom?
Has Yumiko ever openly confessed to Hayato? It's obvious to their little group that she likes him and Hachiman asked a cruel question of Hayato if he only kept her close to keep other girls away. I can understand her desperation to stay close to her crush just hoping that somehow things will change between them. That's part of learning about love.
Hayato found a good way of defusing the rumors - thank Yumiko by name in a public way. Maybe Hachiman's cruel question manipulated him into doing that so there wouldn't be any more whispers about Yukino. Yumiko got what she really wanted too.
Hmm.
We've been getting hints along the way of a past conflict between Yukino and Hayato, something that even involves their families. It appears to be an arranged marriage to me, which Yukino renounced and Hayato may be staying in her orbit hoping, like Yumiko, that she would change her mind for him instead of family obligations.
Unfortunately for Hayato, he's already realized that a wildcard has not only begun to open Yukino's heart for friendship but also for so much more. No wonder he considers Hachiman a rival.
